  1. Esperanza and her friends try to act like adults because they want to be independent and be on their own. They want to get out of their same old boring lives and be someone. tw

  2. I think Esperanza and her friends try to act like adults mainly because they're at the age that they want to be treated like adults. They're confused about who they are, and want to be treated like something higher than they actually are. Another reason would be that they would try to act like adults is to try to gain attention from adults, and respect from adults.

  4. I think that they try and act like adults because they watch all of the adults in their neighborhood and realize they want to be like them and just be able to grow up and move on with lives making their own choices. Also by watching their actions and reactions towards things, they might pick them up and make the same gestures at times not knowing they do it.

  5. They try to be like adults because growing up in that kind of environment is hard being a kid. The only way you can get out of the house or away from your family you have to marry. Being a kid holds you back from being something you really want to be, and doing things you really want to do. CE

  7. I don't see Esperanza trying to act like an adult as much as her friends. Esperanza is the kid-like one who wants to stay a child and have all of the joy that comes with it. Her friends on the other hand are sucked into the way society works. They want to get married, wear heels, and come into life as an adult at a very early age. One example in the book is when Esperanza and a couple of friends got heels. They put the heels on and strutted their stuff. Although they are still very young, it made them feel and sort of act older than they were. Adults were taking double-takes at them, shocked because they were so young. After walking down the street they stopped at an old bum. He showered them with compliments, and tried to take advantage of them. They are naive and need to just try and be a kid a while longer and grow up when they are ready.

  9. Esperanza and her friends try to act like adults, because everybody who is around them is an adult. They think that growing up would be much better and more fun than staying a child and acting their age. Esperanza does not really try to grow up as much as everybody else is. She thinks that it would be better to stay a child. She does not want to have to grow up and get married. She wants to stay a child and be herself, and does not want to be just like everyone else.

  10. Esperanza and her friends try to be adults because everyone around them is mature and are adults. In this case Esperanza does not want to grow up and be mature, should would rather play with little kids on the playground and run around everywhere yelling and screaming. Since most of Esperanza's friends are trying to be adults and married and mature, shes left alone with kids.

  11. Esperanza's friends try to act like adults because they feel left out and feel like they are already adults so they try extra hard to be one. Other people may not see them as one but inside they feel like they really are.

  16. I think Esperanza and her friends act like adults for attention. Specifically for male attention, because they are teenagers and they are becoming more involved with boys. For instance they wear high heels and walk down the streets, they hangout with boys, and they get married at very young ages. I think by acting more mature they feel they will get more respect, freedom, and attention from others. Some girls don't want to be at home anymore or have to follow their parents rules or regulations so by getting married at a young age they think they will be on their own, independent, and own their own things like a home and materials. This is why I think Esperanza and her friends try to act like adults. M.M

  18. I just think that Ezperanza and her friends are trying a bit too hard to act older. They seem pretty naive and don't know what they are doing.

  19. I think Esperanza and her friends try to act like adults because as kids they have no control. No one sees them as mature but in their minds if you get married and act like, and dress like an adult that different people and boys will give you more attention. I think they try to grow up way to fast.

  20. I agree with A.B., that Esperanza's friends act more like adults than Esperanza. Another example is is when Esperanza and Sally are at the monkey garden and Sally goes of with some boys while Esperanza stays and play. I think Esperanza realizes that she do not want to be like her grandmother or Rafaela, who sit in there house and stare out the window. Esperanza has a kind of maturity that her friends haven't received, and it helps her with tasks all though out the story.

  21. I think Esperanza's friends are the ones that a trying to act like adults and Esperanza is the rebellious one who wants to always be a kid. But her friends want to be adults as soon as they can. they wear heels and get married at early ages. Maybe because they want to get out of their neighborhood and get out on their own. Esperanza doesn't want that.

  23. Esperanza and her friends act like adults for the same reason when you played "dress up". You wanted to do everything your parents did and so you got dressed up in their clothes and everything and acted like them for a while. Kinda like when they put those heels on and walked around town.

  24. Esperanza and the girls try and act like adults by the influence of their neighborhood. They are surrounded by women, for example when they were wearing heels, which makes them feel like they should dress that way. When the women flirt with the guys, the girls feel like they should flirt with older men, too. Esperanza and the girls may also want to feel free from being on Mango street, for example, Sally. Sally started acting like an adult as soon as she got the chance to escape, because she felt trapped in her home. EL

  25. I agree with AB and many others. I don't think that Esperanza is trying to grow up though, because after reading the vignette on The Monkey Garden i think she still wants to be a kid and does not want to become like Sally.
I think Esperanza and her friends put on the heels because they want to be like Cinderella. In the book it shows there excitement towards the new shoes. How they fit just right and the sounds the shoes make. So, I don't think they were trying to act like adults they just like the feeling of wearing high heels like Cinderella. I think they might have come off as being adults because they look much older with these heels, and they do not particularly like the comments there getting. MT

  26. just like AB said i think its more of Esperanza's friends trying to be more like adults. Esperanza realizes already that she dosnt want to be apart of the continues cycle of becoming controlled by a man like most women in this story. She notices that women marry men just to escape their lifes thinking they will get into a better life but end up possibly getting a worse one. Esperanza wants to get her wn house and life. she wants to run her life instead of always having an authority figure in her life. But her friends are just getting sucked to the continues cycle.

  27. I believe that Esperanza and her friends try to act like adults because of the rolls of the women around them, like Marin, who Esperanza claims knows a lot of things. "How she knows the story about Davey the Baby's sister got pregnant and what cream is best for taking off your moustache hair and if you count the white flecks on your fingernails you can know how many boys are thinking about you and lots of other things I can't remember now." But I also believe that she is kind-of the odd one out in a sense, like she is the one to "leave the table like a man, without putting back the chair or picking up a plate." She wants to do her own thing with her life, not the same-old same-old roles the women around her play. She wants to live out her childhood.

  28. Esperanza and her friends try to be adults more-so than kids because they know what can happen if they stay childish forever. They see from an outside party what can happen if they keep going down the paths that other adults in the community have gone down. They see that they live a life of sorrow, being lonely, and living in poverty can be a very difficult thing and that they want to know more of what they should do. Esperanza realizes that she needs to leave the neighborhood so she can become more then the people living there. In another aspect, I think Esperanza tries to grasp the child-like feeling so she does know what it is like aswell.

  29. I think Esperanza and her friends try to act like adults because they want the attention they see some of the older girls getting. For an example: They hear the stories about how Earl from Tennessee has a wife, but everyone describes her differently. They want the attention she gets and how everyone discusses Earl's "wife". So in order for them to receive this special attention, they put on high heels and strut around town. Another reason they want to act like adults is because they feel if they are adults they can escape their parents clutch and be independent.

  30. I think that Esperanza and her friends try acting like adults so that they can become independent. Esperanza and her friends are trying to get away from the life they have now. They realize that they don't want to end up like most of the people they see around them. The girls hope that they can escape from the life they have now. B.T.
